Authenticity. In the modern age, it feels as if almost everyone has forgotten what it means to be authentic. With the rise of social media personalities in recent years, many have found it hard to stay true to themselves. One woman who has stood out from the rest, however, is Brye.
It’s almost impossible for most people to connect with their favorite artists. Whereas artists today are all about presenting themselves in a way that makes them likable, Brye is all about being relatable and authentic. She truly is a breath of fresh air.
Creating and performing have always been her outlets, even when she was a child. Brye has been involved in musical theater since she was seven years old, beginning to write just five years later. She has been creating music practically all her life, releasing her first single, “Million Songs,” back in 2019. Before the year closed out, she released “Overrated” and “Wonder.”
The two singles displayed the emotional depth that she has, detailing some of her experiences with love. As her latest single “LEMONS” has been empowering listeners everywhere, we were able to sit down with Brye to get her perspective on things and talk about her newfound fame. We also discussed how quarantine has impacted her personally along with her music, and how she manages to stay motivated through it all.
AUDIBLWAV: How has it been adjusting to all the love and support you have been getting due to your music?
Brye: It’s been kind of weird just because of quarantine, I think. This has all happened, it’s been a blur, and with quarantine progressing none of it really feels real.
How has it been dealing with school following the success of your music?
It’s been kinda hard. I want to put all of my energy into recording, writing, and making sure I have a lot of material ready to go for when I can finally do stuff again. But, I also need to be staying on top of school, so I can graduate. Trying to balance that is really weird.
Do you have your own recording studio to make music during quarantine?
I wish! I sit in my bed and have a USB mic. Nothing fancy, I have a crappy midi-keyboard. If it works, it works!
What was your process when it came to creating “LEMONS?”
During my Sophomore year, I went through a ton of bullying; it was really sucky and it was mostly from guys. I had this one crappy argument where I was like ‘I’m so done! I’m over this. I’m over being treated like this all the time.’ I started with the little “bum-bum bum-bum’ on a loop, and I just started vent singing over it. Originally, the song was called “Bland” and it was just about how sucky this experience was and how it was tasteless and awful. Then I got to the sour lyric, and I was like ‘Oh okay! This will be about lemons, I guess.”
How has it been writing new music while stuck inside?
It’s been kinda hard because a lot of my songs are based on my experiences with people, and I can’t interact with them. My writing has been a lot more growth focused and me-centered just because there’s nothing else to really interact with. I think that it’s also been good for my writing since I kind of rely on my interactions with others in order to feel inspired. But, I can inspire myself and need to learn that.
What keeps you inspired when it comes to music?
Musicals. When I’m not writing for me, I’m usually just pouring everything into writing musical theater. Even though it may not be seen by anyone, that’s the kind of exercise that keeps my writing brain going.
What are your plans for the future?
I don’t know. College felt like something that just always had to happen. For a while, I felt like the only route for me was college, and maybe music on the side. Now, I’m thinking it might be music for me (and college on the side with online classes) and that’s cool.
What do you want to accomplish with your music?
I think my main goal is to just be authentic. I’m young as hell. I’m getting DMs all the time from younger girls (or girls my age) that are like ‘Dude we are so similar. I’m seeing myself through you and you’re putting my thoughts into words.’ That’s really cool for me. I think that if it wasn’t authentic, it wouldn’t have quite that connection. So, I think just staying connected and being real is the main goal.
Brye has still been taking it all in when it comes to the love and support she has been receiving. During it all, she has remained authentic, vowing to stay true to herself, and be real no matter what.
