There’s no doubt that Chicago offers a host of different sounds and flows, with a ton of variety coming from all around the city. Since the city offers so many unique sounds, it’s hard to stick with just one artist. Although artists such as Polo G and G Herbo are usually the first ones that come to mind, the following four artists are rising through the ranks and preparing to take those spots.
SONNY
SONNY popped off during the pandemic, dropping his Golden Child album and subsequently blowing up on TikTok with the second track, “Kill Bill.” SONNY's bag of tricks seems to never deplete, as seen on tracks such as “Moonchild” and “TWEAK,” showcasing the rapper’s energetic highs and lows. SONNY is definitely the next big thing out of Chicago, so hop on the wave before it’s too late.
Recommended Songs: “Kill Bill,” “Hotbox,” “S-Class,” “Wizard Kelly”
Cash$tarr
Cash$tarr is one of the newer artists in the city. He got his footing in 2019, and has been showing his versatility ever since. The north side rapper utilizes his deep vocals to enlist an aggressively subdued flow, which is often paired with brash, exotic beats to emphasize the vocals. If you’re looking for a variety of soundscapes that divert from the traditional drill sound of the city, Cash$tarr is your go-to. Recommended Songs: “Joseph Kony,” “College Type”
LILBOYROC
If there’s anyone with high energy it’s LILBOYROC. He’s from Rogers Park but has moved all around the city, soaking up game and improving his craft, wherever he goes. For him, music is a safe space, with Kid Cudi being one of his major influences. In fact, in an interview with AUDIBLWAV, he cites Cudi as the one who fuels his drive, saying “I wanted to pretty much make sure I could touch somebody with my music the same way Kid Cudi helped me through my darkest days.” If you’re looking for someone who counters the violent nature of Chicago’s music with fun, eccentric bars, LILBOYROC needs to be on your radar.
Recommended Songs: “Honey,” “Round of Applause”
Pat Guwop
Guwop embodies the energy of Chicago better than most of the city’s new-age artists. He often opts for tough, gritty bars that are backed by a speedy flow (make sure to check out “JJ Redick”). But it doesn’t stop there; on “Feel Me,” he really opens up and talks about his past struggles, saying “it’s been raining for a minute, tell me where the fuck the sun at.” It’s important for artists to keep it real, and Pat Guwop is one of the realest out of the city. Make sure to hurry up and get in tune.
Recommended Songs: “JJ Redick,” “Boston George,” “Tyra Banks”
